The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy

This book is about a man who is the supposed precursor to Batman, Superman, Spiderman, and all the other modern superheroes. This story, however, takes place in the late 1700s during the French Revolution. He, like countless other superheroes, is just a plain man by day and a superhero at night. This man’s superhero name is the Scarlet Pimpernel. He saves French aristos by night, while playing his role as a dumb idiot, “the most British Britisher who ever lived.” Once his wife, the queen of England’s social life, Marguerite, receives a verbal ‘either you give me the Scarlet Pimpernel or your brother dies’ from an “emissary” from France, her life is thrown into a turmoil with her brother on one side and the Pimpernel on the other. I really liked this book.
